It is native to northern Europe, northern Asia, and northern North America. Ornamental plant. Edible plant - young fronds raw or cooked; rootstock peeled and roasted. Herbal plant - decoction from sterile fronds in the treatment of back pain, to help speed up the expulsion of the afterbirth.
