The dragonflies are Coenagrion puella, mating. Synonyms: 'Betula americana', 'Betula lanulosa', 'Betula rubra'. Native to eastern United States. Ornamental plant cultivated mainly for its bark. Edible plant - American Indians used the boiled sap as a sweetener similar to maple syrup, and the inner bark as a survival food. Herbal plant - the essential oils derived from leaves, inner bark, and buds contain terpenes, demonstrating insecticidal, nematicidal, and antibacterial properties. Useful plant - closely grained wood is sometimes used for local furniture, woodenware, and fuel.
