The tadpoles of Pelophylax esculentus, syn. Rana esculenta are foraging and eating algae. The plant occurs in most of Europe, including Britain, from Sweden to northern Africa and western Asia up to Kashmir, also introduced in United States and Canada. Edible plant - leaves raw, added to salads, they have an agreeable flavour. Herbal plant - it has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties; topically it can be used as a soothing, cleansing and healing agent to treat minor burns, skin rashes, ulcers and other skin irritations; leaves contain high levels of beta sitosterol and is a specific for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate, and bladder and kidney disorders.
