It origins in central Europe, first domesticated by the Greeks and Romans and later used in Medieval gardens. Ornamental plant. Edible plant - petals raw or cooked, they are used for making jam; seeds of roses are generally a good source of vitamin E, they can be ground and mixed with flour or added to other foods as a supplement, be sure to remove the seed hairs! Herbal plant - petals are antibacterial, a mild astringent and tonic, rich in tannins, can be either dried or converted into conserves or syrups; essential oil from the flowers is used in aromatherapy to counter depression, anxiety and negative feelings(?). Usable plants - essential oil obtained from the flowers is used in perfumery, as an additive to bath water and in skin care preparations.
