The thirsty fly is Sarcophaga carnaria. Native to southern Europe. Edible plant - young leaves cooked, rich in vitamin C. Herbal plant - roots have been used in the treatment of coughs and chest colds; immature seeds have been used in the treatment of diarrhoea with blood. Usable plant - the plant has an extensive root system and suckers freely which makes it a good soil stabilizer for river and lakeside banks; often grown for hedges.
