The genus Lactuca originated in the Mediterranean, with Lactuca serriola L. being the most common and widely distributed species. Edible plant - young leaves can be eaten raw or cooked, although with caution. Possible poisonous plant! Herbal plant - cause hallucinations used in bigger quantities; milky sap contains opium-like, non-addictive substance, thus could be used in curing of the opium addicted people.
