It is native to Europe, western and central Asia, north-western Africa, Morocco, Iberia and the British Isles, north to northern Scandinavia, and east to northern Pakistan and Xinjiang in western China. Edible plant - young leaves raw or cooked. Herbal plant - juice of the plant has an inhibitory effect on Bacillus pyocyaneum and on gram-negative bacteria. Useful plant - a yellow dye is obtained from the whole plant.
