It is native to Japan and, perhaps, China and Korea. Edible plant - young leaves boiled, the old leaves are powdered and used to colour food. Herbal plant - the stem bark is antirheumatic, diuretic and tonic, leafs are used in cases of difficult delivery. Useful plant - the plant can be grown as a hedge, it is very tolerant of trimming and succeeds even in severe maritime exposure; an extract of the leaves is used as an ingredient in commercial cosmetic preparations as an emollient and hair conditioner.
