With hoarfrost. Native to eastern Canada and much of the north-central and north-eastern United States; widely spread in Northern Hemisphere. Ornamental plant. Herbal plant - the leaves and leaf oil have been traditionally used as medicine; in folk medicine, has been used to treat bronchial catarrh, enuresis, cystitis, psoriasis, uterine carcinomas, amenorrhea and rheumatism; today, it is mainly used in treatment of respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, bacterial skin infections, and cold sores, it is also used in homeopathy as 'mother tincture' or dilution. Useful plant - the wood is light, soft, not strong, brittle, coarse grained, very durable, easily worked, does not warp; the bark is a source of tannin; an essential oil is obtained from the leaves and branches, it is used in perfumery and in medicines; the fresh branches are used as besoms.
