The butterfly is Pieris brassicae, very popular once upon a time, rare today. It is native to Europe, including the British Isles, and central Asia; cultivated worldwide for agricultural purposes. Important bees feeding plant. Foraging plant. Edible plant - leaves raw or cooked as a potherb; roots cooked. Herbal plant - the plant is antirheumatic, antiscrophulatic, depurative, detergent and tonic; an infusion of the flowers has been used as an eyewash. Usable plant - ground-cover plant, trampling resistant.
