It is native to parts of Eurasia, but is a widespread European import to North America. Ornamental plant. Edible plant - leaves and young shoots raw or cooked, rich in vitamin C and of pleasant mild flavour; roots raw or cooked with a nut-like flavour, very palatable! Herbal plant - plant has been used as a cure for hydrophobia in Russia.
