Native to Europe; from France north-east to southern Finland, east beyond the Urals into Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, and south-east to Bulgaria and the Crimea. Edible plant - leaves raw or cooked. Herbal plant - the bark of all species in the genus Ulmus may have anti-inflammatory effects in the gut. Usable plant - a fibre is obtained from the inner bark; the tree yields valuable lumber for carpentry.
