Native to Japan, Korea, the Russian Far East, and parts of China (Gansu, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Jilin, Liaoning, Nei Mongol, Shaanxi, Shandong, Shanxi). Ornamental plant. Edible plant - fruits cooked with a sharp, acid flavour, used in preserves and confections; leaves (?). Herbal plant - roots are antirheumatic. Usable plant - the plant is very amenable to trimming and can be grown as an almost impenetrable formal or informal hedge; a yellow dye is obtained from roots and wood.
