It is native to northern Africa (Morocco), south-western Asia, and Europe, but spread worldwide. Ornamental plant. Edible plant - leaves raw or cooked; flower buds and petals raw, eaten in sandwiches, soups and salads. Herbal plant - the herb is mildly anodyne, antispasmodic, antitussive, demulcent, digestive, emollient, expectorant, laxative, ophthalmic, purgative and tonic; a strong decoction of the roots has been recommended for the treatment of scorbutic complaints and eczema; an insect repellent spray can be made from an infusion of the leaves.
